Thorpe has served as the Municipal Association of Victoria’s Aboriginal employment adviser and as the Lakes Entrance Basketball Association’s president for three years. She has also served on the Nowa Nowa Primary School’s school council, a steering committee for Indigenous administrators, and the Institute of Public Administration Australia.

Lidia Thorpe was the chair of the Victorian NAIDOC Committee. Thorpe has also served as an Aboriginal employment adviser for the Municipal Association of Victoria, as president of the Lakes Entrance Basketball Association for three years, and as a member of the Nowa Primary School’s school council.

She was a member of the Indigenous Administrators steering committee, a member of the Community of Practice, a member of the Institute of Public Administration Australia, and a project manager with the East Gippsland Shire Council, where she addressed disadvantage in Lakes Entrance through the Advancing Country Towns Project.

Thorpe won the Northcote by-election in 2017 after obtaining 45.22% of the primary vote, giving her a winning distribution of 50.93%, 11% more than the Labor candidate.
