Pauline Hanson Career and Achivements

Pauline started politics career in 1994 and served as a councillor for the City of Ipswich until 1995, when administrative changes demanded early elections. She narrowly lost re-election.She joined the Liberal Party of Australia in 1996 and ran as the Liberal candidate for the House of Representatives from Oxley in the federal elections. After the party disendorsed her, she ran for parliament as an independent candidate.

She addressed racism and immigration in her inaugural speech. She claimed that other races and cultures are taking over Australia and giving nothing in return. She believed that because of the lax immigration policies, Australians would have less work opportunities.

In April 1997, she co-founded the ‘One Nation’ political party with senior advisor David Oldfield and professional fundraiser David Ettridge. The party advocated for zero net immigration and an update of the 1967 constitutional referendum.

The party felt that as the true Australian culture was dwindling, it was necessary to end multiculturalism, remove special Aboriginal funding and native title, and prevent foreigners from holding Australian lands.

The party’s economic objectives included increasing limitations on foreign capital and its flow overseas, as well as promoting protectionism and trade retaliation in order to reverse the effects of globalization on the Australian economy.

On the domestic front, the party opposed privatization, competition policies, and the GST. It intended to establish a government-sponsored bank to provide loans to farmers and small enterprises at a low interest rate of 2%.

One Nation, led by Pauline Hanson, won 11 seats in the 1998 Queensland state election. However, just before the 1998 federal election, the voting method was modified to preferential voting, and the Liberal candidate, Cameron Thompson, was finally elected.

She barely lost the Queensland Senate seat in the 2001 Federal Elections. The following year, she was removed from the party due to allegations of electoral fraud. She was defeated by John Tingle of the Shooters Party in the New South Wales (NSW) Upper House election of 2003.

In the 2004 Federal elections, she ran as an independent candidate and received only 31.77% of the needed quota of primary votes. She did, however, retrieve her $150,000 deposit from the Australian Electoral Commission.

On May 24, 2007, she established ‘Pauline’s United Australia Party’ (PUAP). In the 2009 Queensland state election, she ran as an independent from Beaudesert and finished third.

She declared in February 2010 that she will de-register PUAP and relocate to the United Kingdom. However, after rejoining the One Nation party, she ran in the 2013 federal elections for a Senate seat from New South Wales and failed again. In November 2014, she was appointed as the leader of One Nation.
