Kevin McCarthy started his career as an intern for Congressman Bill Thomas while still in high school in 1987 and later became a member of his staff, where he remained until 2002. From the late 1990s until the early 2000s, he was Thomas’ district director.

While working for Thomas, he built important political connections that helped him win his first election as a Kern Community College District trustee in 2000. He previously led the California Young Republicans in 1995 and the Young Republican National Federation from 1999 to 2001.

In 2002, he was elected to the California State Assembly to represent the 32nd Assembly District, where he worked to reduce the state’s budget deficit, update the state workers’ compensation system, and improve California’s business climate. In 2003, he was unanimously elected as the Assembly Republican Leader by his Republican colleagues, making him the first freshman legislator and the first from Kern County to hold the position.

In December 2020, he was one of 126 Republican House members who supported a lawsuit challenging the results of the 2020 presidential election. Following the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, he voted against recognizing Biden’s victory in two states, but accepted him as president-elect on January 8, noting that he would still win if those two states were not included.

McCarthy was the Republican nominee for speaker in January 2023, but he was defeated on the 15th ballot. Following a stalemate between the McCarthy-led House Republican conference and the Biden administration, McCarthy and the Biden administration negotiated a resolution to the 2023 debt-ceiling crisis, avoiding a first-ever national default.
