Eva Lawler Career and Achievements

Lawler appeared to be up against it when she was nominated as the Labor candidate in Drysdale for the 2016 election. Lia Finocchiaro, the seat’s then-Country Liberal Party incumbent, chose to seek the new seat of Spillett after that seat absorbed much of her old base.

Even after the redistribution, the CLP retained an 11.5 percent majority in the downtown Palmerston seat, making it a comfortably secure Country Liberal seat on paper. Prior to 2016, Labor had only won the seat once, in a landslide in 2005 when it took two seats in Palmerston—the only time it has done so. However, in 2008, Labor’s majority in Drysdale was reduced.

However, by the time the writs for the 2016 election were dropped, the CLP’s support in Palmerston had fallen. In one poll, the CLP received only 37% of the vote in an area that had been a CLP stronghold for nearly four decades. On election night, the CLP’s primary vote fell by more than 20%, and Lawler was elected with a swing of more than 16%.

Lawler was appointed Minister of Education on September 11, 2016. She was re-elected in 2020 with a slim majority, becoming the first Labor MP to win a second term in a Palmerston seat.Lawler was chosen unopposed to succeed Natasha Fyles, who resigned due to a scandal over unreported shares, on December 20, 2023. Deputy Chief Minister Chansey Paech was elected.
