Emmer was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011, before being elected to Congress. He was defeated by Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party contender Mark Dayton in the 2010 gubernatorial race by less than half a percentage point.

Emmer was elected to Congress in 2014, winning Michele Bachmann’s 6th Congressional District seat. He has been re-elected four times since then.
