Esther Louise McVey is a British politician and television presenter who has been serving in the Cabinet Office as Minister of State without Portfolio since November 2023.She has been the Conservative Party’s Member of Parliament (MP) for Tatton since 2017.
She previously served in the Cabinet as Minister of State for Housing and Planning from 2019 to 2020, as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from January to November 2018, and as Minister of State for Employment from 2014 to 2015.
McVey was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in 2010 as the MP for Wirral West. She was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Disabled People in the Cameron-Clegg coalition from 2012 to 2013, before becoming Minister of State for Employment from 2013 to 2015. She was sworn into the Privy Council in 2014 and joined Cabinet following the reshuffle that year.
She lost her seat in the 2015 general election and served as Chair of the British Transport Police Authority for eighteen months until returning to parliament in the 2017 general election, succeeding former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne in Tatton.
McVey was the Deputy Chief Whip in the second May ministry from 2017 to 2018. In January 2018, she was named Work and Pensions Secretary. In July, she apologized to the House of Commons for deceiving them about the new Universal Credit plan, stating a National Audit Office audit suggested it should be rolled out faster when, in reality, the report concluded the roll-out should be delayed.
In November 2018, she resigned in protest at Brexit negotiations and Theresa May’s proposed Brexit withdrawal deal. She created the Blue Collar Conservative parliamentary caucus before running for Conservative Party leadership in 2019, but was eliminated in the first round after finishing last with nine votes. Following the election, she served as Minister of State for Housing and Planning until Boris Johnson’s first Cabinet reshuffle.
