Nikki Haley is an American politician and diplomat who served as the 29th United States ambassador to the United Nations from January 2017 until December 2018.Haley, a Republican, is the first Indian American to serve in a presidential cabinet.She is running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
Haley began her career at her family’s garment company before becoming treasurer and then president of the National Association of Women Business Owners. She was elected to the House of Representatives of South Carolina in 2004 and served three terms. She was elected governor of South Carolina in 2010, during her third term, and was re-elected in 2014. Haley was South Carolina’s first female governor and the state’s second governor of Indian ancestry, following fellow Republican Bobby Jindal of Louisiana.
In January 2017, Haley resigned as governor to become the United States’ ambassador to the United Nations.In a bipartisan vote, the United States Senate confirmed her 96-4. On December 31, 2018, she resigned as ambassador.Haley is a Republican Party presidential primary candidate for president of the United States in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
