Pezzullo joined the Department of Defense as a graduate in 1987.Pezzullo joined the Foreign Affairs Department of Senator Gareth Evans, whom he later referred to as a friend, in 1993.He remained in Parliament House until December 2001, serving as deputy head of staff to then-opposition leader Kim Beazley.
He rejoined the Department of Defense in February 2002 and was promoted to the position of Deputy Secretary Strategy in that authority in 2006.Between February 2008 to May 2009, he oversaw the Defence White Paper team and was the primary author of the 2009 Defence White Paper.
