Mark Zahra started racing in Western Australia, where he worked as an apprentice for Dean White. On Christmas Day 1988, he raced Wail Spring in his first race at Geraldton Racecourse. On March 1, 1989, on Winrosy, he won his first race at the same track.
After that, he went to Victoria and worked for Brian Cox in Wodonga and then for Tony McEvoy in Lindsay Park.When Zahra was taught by Jim Conlan, Above Deck won the Doomben Cup in 2006. It was her first Group 1 win.
