Jimmy Barnes was born to Jim Swan and Dorothy in Cowcaddens, Glasgow, Scotland. His father, Jim Swan, was a prizefighter, while his mother was a housewife.He has four siblings: John, Dorothy, Linda, and Alan.

His older brother, John, went on to become a singer known as Swanee. Barnes was first interested in singing, but John encouraged him and showed him how. He and his family arrived in Australia when he was five years old on January 21, 1962, in Adelaide, but then settled in nearby Elizabeth.Lisa, another sister, was born later the same year.Their parents later divorced.

Jimmy Barnes Career

Barnes began an apprenticeship in a foundry with the South Australian Railways in 1973, but his brother’s passion of music led him to join a band. In 1974, his brother Swanee was playing drums for Fraternity, who had recently parted ways with singer Bon Scott.

From 1978 to 1984, Cold Chisel released five studio albums and received multiple TV Week Countdown Awards.The band broke up in December 1983, with its final performances taking place at the Sydney Entertainment Centre from December 12 to 15, 1983.

Barnes’ solo career began less than a month after Cold Chisel’s Last Stand tour began in December 1983. He formed a band that made up Arnott, former Fraternity bass guitarist Bruce Howe, and guitarists Mal Eastick (ex-Stars) and Chris Stockley (ex-The Dingoes) and began touring and recording for his solo album.

Barnes’ second album, For the Working Class Man, was released in December 1985 and included the songs “I’d Die to Be With You Tonight” and “Working Class Man”. For the Working Class Man debuted at number one on the Australian national chart in December 1985, where it remained for seven weeks. The album, titled simply Jimmy Barnes in the United States, was released in February, corresponding with the release of Ron Howard’s film Gung Ho, which featured “Working Class Man”.

Barnes’ fourth studio album, recorded in 1990, included songwriting contributions from Desmond Child, Diane Warren, and Holly Knight. Two Fires was released in August 1990. debuted at number one in the Australian charts. The album included the top-twenty songs “Lay Down Your Guns,” “Let’s Make It Last All Night,” and “When Your Love Is Gone.”

Rage and Ruin, Barnes’ fourteenth solo studio album, was released in August of 2010. Barnes claims that the majority of the lyrics and song themes were inspired by a notebook he kept while struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Rage and Ruin debuted at number three on the ARIA Charts on September 5, 2010.

Barnes announced in 2021 that he had joined a rockabilly band with Slim Jim Phantom and Chris Cheney.Barnes announced in April 2022 the upcoming release of Soul Deep 30, which will celebrate the album’s 30th anniversary, as well as a countrywide tour.Blue Christmas, Barnes’ first Christmas album, was released in November 2022.It marked his fifteenth number-one solo record.

Barnes announced in March 2023 the creation of The Barnestormers, a supergroup consisting of Barnes, Chris Cheney, Slim Jim Phantom, Jools Holland, and Kevin Shirley. The self-titled album was released on May 26, 2023.
