Ashworth attended the College of West Anglia from 1987 to 1989.After spending time in Norwich City’s youth, Ashworth joined non-league team Eastbourne Town, where he played 21 games and scored four goals before going on to St. Leonards. Ashworth later spent time in the United States coaching the West Florida Fury before returning to England to play for Wisbech Town. Ashworth left Wisbech in the autumn of 2000, citing financial issues at the club.

After retiring from football, Ashworth remained active in the sport, becoming academy director at Peterborough United in 2000.In 2001, he became Cambridge United’s center of excellence director until March 2004, when he moved to West Bromwich Albion to help youth team boss Aidy Boothroyd. Following Boothroyd’s resignation in July of that year, he took over as youth team manager until being appointed to the club’s sporting and technical director in December 2007.

On September 17, 2012, Ashworth was named FA director of elite development.He is a co-creator of the “England DNA,” an elite player development plan aimed at “helping create winning senior teams, in the men’s and women’s game.”In August 2018, it was reported that Ashworth has been shortlisted by Manchester United as a technical director candidate.

In September 2018, it was reported that Ashworth has resigned from his position with the FA and would become Technical Director at Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion in spring 2019.It was confirmed in February 2022 that Ashworth had agreed to become Sporting Director at Premier League team Newcastle United.
