Bishan Singh Bedi Biography

Bedi made his Test debut in 1966 against the then-mighty West Indies at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. He didn’t make an eye-catching entrance to the big stage, but he was kept by his control and the range he provided to the Indian spin attack.During the Australia Test series in 1969-70, the outspoken player came into his own, getting up 21 wickets, including his best test figures of 7/98 at Kolkata.

Bedi put his variations to the fore against England in 1972-73, taking 25 wickets in five Tests at an average of 25.28. This was the era when India ruled supreme at home, owing to a spin foursome that baffled visiting batters to no end.

Bedi succeeded Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi as Indian Captain in 1976. Under his leadership, the team defeated the powerful West Indies at Port of Spain by chasing a then-record 406 runs in the fourth innings.

This was followed by a home series win over New Zealand. However, following defeats against England, Australia, and Pakistan, he was removed as captain by Sunil Gavaskar.

Bedi was always open and forthright in his opinions, and this persisted even after his retirement. He previously complained to England bowler John Laver’s use of Vaseline in 1976-77, which was later proven to be fully legal.

During his captaincy, he declared the Indian innings at Kingston in reaction to Windies fast bowlers’ aggressive bowling. Later in his coaching career, he famously threatened to abandon the Indian squad at sea due to their bad performance.

The left-arm spinner took 266 wickets in 67 test matches at a solid average of 28.71. Following his retirement in 1979, he also became the Indian team’s coach.

Bedi is known for speaking his thoughts, has long been a skeptic of the so-called T20 revolution. On many occasions, his frank criticism of Muttiah Muralitharan’s bowling action raised a few eyebrows.
