Carney made his National Rugby League Premiership debut at the age of 17 during the 2004 NRL season. He was named the Canberra Raiders’ Rookie of the Year after only a few appearances.
Despite only appearing in 11 games and scoring one try. Carney was given a starting spot in the Junior Kangaroos’ annual match against Papua New Guinea, when he scored a career-high 20 points.
Carney scored three extra-time goals to help Canberra finish in the top eight of the National Rugby League (NRL) competition ladder. He was re-selected to the Junior Kangaroos squad, where he was named captain.
Carney joined the Sydney Roosters for the 2010 NRL season after his season-long ban from the NRL expired.Carney purchased a punching bag to exercise with in preparation for his return season.In a pre-season trial against his old team, the Atherton Roosters, he made his debut for the club.
