After retiring from the game in 1969, he went on to lead Carlton to two premierships, including a record-breaking grand final comeback in 1970 in front of the greatest crowd in football history.And after the amazing 1971 season, Barassi made the bold decision to step away from the Blues, changing his focus towards his pledging business career.

He had not played football since 1969, but in 1972 he signed up to play in the Victorian Football Association with Port Melbourne. However, he was injured in his leg and retired after just four games.

In 1993, Barassi returned to coaching for the Sydney Swans. This has been seen as a triumph for the AFL due to Barassi’s media experience and reputation. During his three seasons in Sydney, he helped to improve the popularity of Australian rules football and the Sydney Swans in the city dominated by rugby league.
