Ashwin was born on September 17, 1986, in Madras, Tamil Nadu, to Ravichandran and Chitra.His father, Ravichandran, was a fast bowler in club cricket.Ashwin received his education at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School.He earned a BTech in information technology from SSN College of Engineering in Chennai.Ashwin began his career as an opening hitter before changing to medium pace bowling and then off spin.
Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu against Haryana in the Ranji Trophy in 2006 at the age of 20, taking six wickets.He made his List A debut in 2007 against Andhra, getting two wickets.His T20 debut will come against Andhra in the interstate T20 event next month.
Following his strong performance in the 2010 Indian Premier League, Ashwin was named to the Indian side that toured Zimbabwe for a tri-series in May 2010.
