Greta Thunberg Activist Work
Thunberg became an activist after she forced her mom and dad to make some changes to their lifestyles that would lower their carbon effect. In August 2018, when she was 15, she started spending her school days holding up a sign that said “Skolstrejk for climate” outside of the Swedish Parliament to get better action about global climate change. Soon, other students started protesting in the same way in their own communities.
They joined together to start a program called Fridays for Future, which was a faculty climate strike. After Thunberg spoke at the 2018 UN Conference on Climate Change, there were student strikes every six weeks somewhere in the world. In 2019, there have been several coordinated protests in various cities, with more than one million students taking part in each one.
Thunberg chose to sail to North America instead of flying to get to the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit. The part of her speech where she said “How dare you” was widely covered by the media and used in music.
The next day, on September 20, Thunberg walked with many other protesters in New York City to call for action on climate change as part of the New York City Global Climate Strike. The march became the largest climate protest in history, with over 4 million people marching all around the world. She spoke at the UN Youth Climate Summit the next day.
Thunberg went to the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City on September 23. That day, Thunberg and fifteen other kids, such as Ayakha Melithafa, Alexandria Villaseñor, Catarina Lorenzo, Carl Smith, and others, went to a press conference put on by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Together, the group said that they had filed a complaint against the Iroquois League with politicians from countries that aren’t meeting the emission reduction goals they agreed to in the Paris Agreement. These countries are Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, and Turkey. Under the Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the lawsuit takes these countries to task.
The Protocol could be a kind of justice system that lets kids or their guardians who think their rights are being violated file a protest with the right “treaty body,” the Committee on the Rights of the Kid. A complaint will be sent to the countries and they will be asked to respond.
