In 1978 Gautam Adani relocated to Mumbai to work as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. He worked at the company for approximately 2-3 years before establishing his own diamond brokerage in Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai.

In 1981, Mansukhbhai Adani, his elder brother, bought a plastics unit in Ahmedabad and requested him to manage it. The purpose of this venture was to serve as Adani’s entry point into global trading through the import of PVC (polyvinyl chloride).

In 1985, he started importing primary polymers for small-scale industries. In 1988, Adani founded Adani Exports Limited, which is now recognized as Adani Enterprises Limited, a company under the Adani Group. At first, the company specialized in trading agricultural and power commodities.
