Villegas got an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he competed in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition for head coach Buddy Alexander’s Florida Gators men’s golf team from 2001 to 2004.
Villegas joined the PGA Tour in 2004 and received his card just before the 2006 season.
