Villegas got an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he competed in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition for head coach Buddy Alexander’s Florida Gators men’s golf team from 2001 to 2004.
Villegas joined the PGA Tour in 2004 and received his card just before the 2006 season. He had a strong start to his first year on tour in 2006, finishing second twice and third once in his first nine events.In September 2007, Villegas won his second professional event, the Coca-Cola Tokai Classic on the Japan Golf Tour.
