Darling joined the Labour Party in 1977, when he was 23 years old. In 1978, he became a solicitor, then switched to the Scots bar and was admitted as an advocate in 1984.Darling first entered Parliament in the 1987 general election, defeating the incumbent Conservative MP, Sir Alexander Fletcher, by 2,262 votes; he remained an Edinburgh MP for 28 years until his resignation in 2015.
