Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed Darling as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1997, and he was promoted to Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in 1998. After four years in that department, he became Secretary of State for Transport for four years until becoming Secretary of State for Scotland in 2003.
Blair made Darling President of the Board of Trade and Secretary of State for Trade and Industry for the final time in 2006, before new Prime Minister Gordon Brown promoted Darling to succeed himself as Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2007, a position he held until 2010.
He was Chancellor throughout the 2007-2008 financial crisis and the Great Recession.Darling was the chairman of the Better Together Campaign from 2012 to 2014, a cross-party alliance that successfully campaigned for Scotland to remain a part of the United Kingdom in the 2014 independence referendum.
