He played semi-professional rugby league for the Warilla Gorillas in the South Coast Rugby League, where he was given the Mick Cronin Medal as the league’s finest player in 2010.
He also played a key role in Warilla’s Premiership-winning season in 2011 and was named Man of the Match in his team’s Grand Final triumph over Gerringong.Volkanovski then opted to leave rugby league at the age of 23 to seek a professional career in Mixed Martial Arts in the latter half of 2011.
Volkanovski fought in several MMA organizations in Oceania, Asia, from 2012 to July 2016 before signing with the UFC, beginning as an amateur at middleweight and going 4-0 before turning professional. He won a Pacific Xtreme Combat (PXC) title and two Australian Fighting Championship Featherweight titles.Prior to entering the UFC, Volkanovski had a 13-1 record with 10 straight victories.
Volkanovski made his official debut on November 26, 2016, and extended his victory streak to 11 with a second-round TKO against Yusuke Kasuya at UFC Fight Night 101. He revealed at the post-fight press conference that he would move up to featherweight for his next fight.
Volkanovski was set to face Michel Quiones at UFC Fight Night 105 on February 19, 2017.
