Tim Wakefield played baseball in college for Florida Tech. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1988 as a first baseman. In the minor leagues, he began focusing on his pitching, and on July 31, 1992, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the Pirates. Wakefield played for the Pirates until 1993 before joining the Boston Red Sox in 1995.
Wakefield was on to spend almost two decades in Boston and was the team’s longest-serving player (17 years) at the time of his retirement in 2012, surpassing the 20-year mark. In 2009, Wakefield, a right-handed starting pitcher, was selected as an All-Star. He was nominated eight times for the Roberto Clemente Award and won in 2010.
In 1995, he was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year. In 2004 and 2007, Wakefield claimed two World Series titles with the Red Sox. His final career stats were 200-180 wins, 4.41 earned run average, and 2,156 strikeouts.
