Gunston made his AFL debut in the ninth round of the 2010 season against the Brisbane Lions. Gunston got seven disposals and a crucial goal in the fourth quarter in an outstanding start.
He played in 12 games in 2011, scoring five goals against Richmond in round 23.Gunston got homesick after two years in Adelaide and wanted to return to Victoria.
He was transferred to Hawthorn in return for three draft picks from Adelaide and two picks returned.He played 19 games for Hawthorn in his first season, including the 2012 Grand Final, and 23 games in 2013.
Gunston was named Vice-Captain in February 2019, with new Captain Ben Stratton.His forward partnership with Breust was less effective than the previous season, with the pair kicking only 60 goals between them and Hawthorn unable to make the finals.
